Thought streams: the wonder of dreams

Anyone who knows me knows I think A LOT; my mind is always spinning with some train or stream of thought. I love it because it means I’m very self-aware and introspective, and also that my mind is always full of fun ideas. However, on the flip side, it can also mean that I think excessively (i.e. over-analyse) and live in my mind too much, which can be a lot, but that’s not the point of this post and is a story for another day. Let’s focus on the first part, which is that my mind is always full of fun ideas. I’m writing this as a product of that fact and to share my latest musing, which has been about dreams.

Yes, this is a free-flowing thought stream, a.k.a. mind dump, about my fascination with dreams. I’ve always found them a wonder, but lately the fascination upped a notch one morning when I woke up after an interesting dream. I woke up earlier than my alarm clock, but instead of going back to bed, my mind went into thoughts and ideas overdrive, as it sometimes does. So I lay there and began to ponder about dreams. The brain really be making up wacky stories and plots all on its own, and we need to talk about it. I, for one, can personally draft up entire scripts based on some of the dreams I’ve had. Not to mention how the mind will also take a thought(s) or experience(s) we’ve been having when we’re conscious, and conjure its own interpretation in our unconscious visualizations. Separately, if anyone knows the scientific explanation for why that happens, please enlighten me (I know Google is free, but you’ll be providing a great filtering service). My theory is it’s some sort of information processing or sorting.

Getting back on track, if you really think about it, the brain is literally the first ever computer and AI, minus the artificial part, taking input from our lived experiences and creating content based on the data. Much wow, much wonder.

Quick sidebar:

Does anyone else ever think about the fact that, consciously or unconsciously, a lot of technology is modelled after natural phenomena? For example, the camera lens and the human eye… think about it.

Now, I’m not a science girlie (I do wish, though), but I am a Christian girlie, and so my wonder also extends to the spiritual side of dreams, which the Bible brings to light. In the Bible, God often uses dreams as a means to communicate with people, bringing messages of guidance, revelation, warnings, etc. Sometimes, the dreams are symbolic and need divine interpretation, like the various dreams in the story of Joseph in the Old Testament. Other times, they are literal and direct, like God’s warning in the other Joseph story (New Testament). There’s a part of me that wonders why all God-given dreams can’t be literal, like, what is the need for the cryptic element, I’m just a girl. That said, their mysterious nature does encourage us to seek God’s counsel, and I do think the imagery and symbolism present in these dreams reflect His creativity and poetic prowess.

After two whole years, Pharaoh dreamed that he was standing by the Nile, and behold, there came up out of the Nile seven cows, attractive and plump, and they fed in the reed grass. And behold, seven other cows, ugly and thin, came up out of the Nile after them, and stood by the other cows on the bank of the Nile. And the ugly, thin cows ate up the seven attractive, plump cows. And Pharaoh awoke. And he fell asleep and dreamed a second time. And behold, seven ears of grain, plump and good, were growing on one stalk. And behold, after them sprouted seven ears, thin and blighted by the east wind. And the thin ears swallowed up the seven plump, full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream.

Genesis 41:1-7

In conclusion, there is no conclusion or real point to this post other than to share (one of) the random musings I process through my computer, pun fully intended, which you will get if you’ve been paying attention!

So that’s all folks! Siri, play All I have to do is dream by The Everly Brothers.
